We are a spin-out social enterprise from the JITSUVAX Project

The founders of JITSUVAX Training are the same team who developed and tested the Empathetic Refutational Interview (ERI), including world-renowned expert on misinformation, Professor Stephan Lewandowsky. We have unrivalled knowledge of the ERI vaccine conversation framework and are passionate about sharing it.

Our training is led by psychologists with unique expertise. At every training session we combine our knowledge with the skills and experience of those we are training for a collaborative and respectful learning environment.

What does the name ‘JITSUVAX’ mean?

Jiu Jitsu is a martial art. The name translates to ‘gentle art’. It teaches people to leverage an opponent’s force, working with it rather than trying to use their own force to combat it. Our ‘opponent’ in this context is vaccine (‘vax’) misinformation.

In the spirit of Jiu Jitsu, we are working with people’s motivations, not against them. The aim is to empower people to make their own choices about vaccination from the best information.

“I believe everyone should be empowered to make well-informed decisions about vaccination based on the best information.”

With nearly 25 years’ experience across the NHS, from general practice to NHS England, Emma brings extensive expertise in vaccination programmes, public health and community engagement.

Emma is passionate about understanding and addressing barriers to vaccine uptake. Throughout her career, she has worked closely with healthcare professionals, public health teams and communities to develop practical, sustainable solutions that improve access to vaccination and support informed decision-making.

Most recently, Emma spent four years as a Vaccination and Prevention Project Manager for North Central London Integrated Care Board, leading projects to improve vaccine uptake and engagement. She contributed to the development of the UKHSA’s ‘Why Vaccinate’ campaign. Her work has received national recognition, including the People’s Choice award by the National Immunisation Network (2025) for developing a diseases visual aid to support conversations about vaccination.

Emma brings a wealth of experience in vaccination programmes, public health and community engagement to her role within the JITSUVAX Training team. Her insights from working across NHS services, community partnerships and national vaccination initiatives help bring practical, real-world perspectives to discussions about vaccine conversations and uptake.

“I’m committed to ensuring every patient voice is heard by involving people from underserved groups and by working with community groups and collaborators.”

Anna has been passionate about improving vaccine uptake since her PhD in 2011. Her investigation into how to enhance MMR vaccine uptake in a hesitant population led to her consulting for Sense UK, the national deafblind charity, to identify communities at risk of rubella, which can cause deaf-blindness, and informed vaccine uptake interventions to support them. She was also commissioned to work with underserved populations in London to identify barriers to MMR vaccine uptake.

Anna is an expert trainer, having developed behaviour change training for NHS GP practice nurses to help them support patients with type 2 diabetes.

She teaches behavioural science at Bristol Medical School, has published 50+ journal articles and has presented at more than 40 national and international conferences.

Kate is a HCPC-registered Health Psychologist, researcher and trainer with over 10 years’ experience in NHS and academic settings, specialising in behaviour change and healthcare communication.

An experienced facilitator, Kate has delivered behaviour change training across NHS and academic settings for healthcare professionals, multidisciplinary teams, patients and postgraduate students. Internationally, she has led projects in Uganda and Zimbabwe focused on infection prevention, antimicrobial resistance and healthcare communication, helping to improve communication and practice in complex healthcare settings.

Her clinical work, including one-to-one and group psychological interventions, focuses on helping patients build confidence, develop realistic expectations and feel better prepared for surgery. This work has contributed to the development of psychological support pathways within physical health services. Her research has explored how psychological science can be used to improve patient experiences across a range of healthcare settings.
